Sciatica is a term that refers to the painful inflammation of the sciatic nerve that extends from your buttocks all the way down to your toes. Sciatica sufferers often have a history of low back pain.
There can be several causes of sciatic nerve irritation that include strain/sprain injuries of the lower back, disc problems in the low back, sacroiliac joint problems, poor posture, obesity or other internal diseases.
When the cause of the sciatica is due to the vertebrae of the lower spine being shifted out of alignment, the sciatic nerve can flare up and cause pain along the entire nerve path from the buttock, back of thigh, into the calf and down to the foot – or at various points along the nerve such as the buttocks, knee or calf.
Chiropractic adjustments can help restore alignment of the vertebrae in the lower spine to remove the pressure from the sciatic nerve, thus alleviating sciatica pain.
